The image is a tangential part of beautifully captured images of unlicensed mining by Galamsey youth in Obuasi Ghana highlights the many dangers to their health and the attendant environmental degradation.

It also goes a long way to showcase the desperate situation the miners face as they seek small nuggets of gold – known locally as “de money”. Their daily find, shared equitably amongst the miners, is in many cases the only source of income for the otherwise unemployed young men and women.
