Syncopation, in music, is the displacement of regular accents associated with given metrical patterns, resulting in a disruption of the listener's expectations and the arousal of a desire for the reestablishment of metric normality. In this exhibition Cole presents a series of paintings executed on sheets of music from famous jazz musicians such as Miles Davis and John Coltrane, making the connection between jazz and abstraction. As Syncopation was regularly employed by these mid-century jazz greats, the series not only pays homage to these musicians, but also tells the story of abstraction through enigmatic music. A point made more straightforwardly with ten new works painted on Vinyl records, created especially for her London debut.
Other works showcased are from Cole’s Centered series which explores being in the moment, a reference point for when life’s challenges and emotions pushes one off balance.
Cole is a Los Angeles-based abstract artist whose works continually seeks new ways to interprete energy. According to the artist, inspiration and ideas change, access to knowledge varies, and we all evolve, therefore, each of her work is an extension of her thoughts, past experiences, and present exchanges of energy.
