Alain Josephine | Architecture of Tropical spaces

7 Oct – 4 Nov 2022

Architecture of Tropical Spaces presents a collection of vibrant abstract paintings by Guadeloupe-based artist Alain Joséphine. The large acrylic-on-canvas works contrast light,

shade and flights of colour that celebrate the topography of the islands of Martinique, while positioning life in a tropical environment as a daily confrontation with the power of nature.

Showing alongside Joséphine’s paintings are sculptures from the Baga Nimba series by Nigerian British artist Niyi Olagunju, a collection that explores the cultural legacies of African artefacts within the global art market. Halves of vertically bisected Guinean Nimba sculptures are cast in metal and reconnected; through this separation and repurposing of form, Olagunju places intended tribal function alongside monetary value based on Western ideas of provenance and rarity.

Architecture of Tropical Spaces was held at the Lavery Studios at Cromwell Place; the former home and studio to society portrait artist Sir John Lavery and part of the five remodeled grade-A listed townhouses which form a unique exhibition space and members community. This show forms part of their London Art Week programme.

Alongside this exhibition was a solo presentation of works by Alain Joséphine at TAFETA's Bloomsbury galleries, which continues runs from 07 October - 4 November 2022
