Biography
b. 1961, Lagos, Nigeria. Works and lives in Lagos, Nigeria.
Duke Asidere has a BA, Fine Arts from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (1988) and a Master of Fine Arts in painting from the same university (1990).
He taught at the Federal Auchi Polytechnic for five years before starting full time studio work in Lagos in 1995. Asidere’s practice is primarily figurative painting, expressed in a variety of media, but his hyper-expressive personality has seen him experiment with drawings, engravings, collage and spray cans.
Based in Lagos Nigeria, the City and its Women are recurring themes in Asidere’s paintings; with the colours and a languid aesthetic generally at odds with the restless energy of the environment they were produced in.
